Self-managed home care package providers explained: keep control of your funding, more hours of care, no hidden fees. See how self-management works.
If you've been comparing self-managed home care package providers, you've probably noticed the same complaint everywhere: package fees eat into the hours of actual care you receive. A self-managed home care package puts that decision back in your hands — you choose how your funding is spent, which workers you see, and when.
Since 1 November 2025, "home care package" has technically become Support at Home, the program that replaced Home Care Packages. Most people still search for the old name, so we'll use both terms here — but everything below reflects how self-management works under the current Support at Home rules.
What does "self-managed" actually mean?
Self-managing your package doesn't mean going it alone. You still need a registered Support at Home provider — someone has to hold your government funding, process claims, and make sure the workers you engage meet program requirements. What changes is how much of that provider does for you versus how much you do yourself.
With a self-managed home care package, you typically:
- Choose your own support workers or engage a provider's staff directly
- Decide how your quarterly budget is allocated across services
- Set your own schedule rather than following a provider-dictated roster
- Review your own spending and budget balance regularly
Your provider still manages the money, handles claiming with Services Australia, and assigns you a Care Partner — but the day-to-day decisions sit with you.c
Self-managed home care package providers exist precisely because not everyone wants — or needs — a fully managed service. If you're comfortable making a few calls and keeping some records, self-management usually stretches your funding noticeably further.
How self-management works under Support at Home
The rules changed slightly when Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages, and the changes actually favour self-managing participants. Every Support at Home budget now has care management deducted at a flat 10% before your available funds are calculated — down from the 20–40% some providers were charging under the old system.

Your provider is still the one claiming your subsidy from Services Australia and reporting on your behalf, so none of this replaces a provider relationship — it just changes what you're doing hands-on.
Why choose a self-managed aged care provider
The honest answer, for most people, is money and trust. A self-managed aged care provider with low overheads passes more of your funding through to actual support hours instead of administration. Beyond the numbers, self-management tends to suit people who:
- Already have support workers they know and trust
- Want the flexibility to change services quickly without waiting on a provider
- Value transparency and want to see exactly where every dollar goes
- Are comfortable with some light admin (or have family who can help)
If none of that sounds like you, that's fine too — a fully managed package is a completely reasonable choice. Self-management is an option, not an obligation.
Self-managed home care package providers across Australia
Sensible Care works as a self-managed home care package provider across New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. Wherever you're based, our approach is the same: low overheads, a dedicated local Care Partner, and a Support at Home budget that goes further because we're not charging you for services you don't need.

Is a self-managed home care package right for you?
If you're weighing up self-managed home care package providers against a fully managed service, start by asking yourself how much control you actually want, and how much paperwork you're realistically willing to take on. There's no wrong answer — but if you'd rather have more hours of real support than more of your budget disappearing into fees, self-management is worth a serious look.
